Vincent Rapide

All matching and mostly original, this is a particularly well preserved example of Vincent’s iconic Rapide 1000cc V-twin. Recent engine inspection and mechanical attention by a specialist included new cams and followers, clutch rebuild, dynamo refurbishment and solid state regulator (hidden in the original case), new Concentric carburettors and an oil and filter change. More recently it has had the ignition timing checked and valve clearances adjusted, carbs set up perfectly by Classic Bike Workshop and test ridden by myself with complete satisfaction. The original carburettors come with the bike, which remains in standard specification in all respects. A VOC certificate and factory records confirm it is an all-matching numbers machine and this is supported by copies of factory test certificates, despatch records and an old RF60A log book confirming first registration 7th May 1952 with North London dealers White & Martin. Other documentation includes a collection of old MOT certificates, service invoice and records for the recent engine work, a genuine if tatty parts list and a list of previous owners from the very first (4 former keepers stated on the V5C but it looks like maybe seven).

Condition is described as excellent but it really is hard to imagine it being any better in many respects. Clearly some of the chrome is showing signs of age, the wheel rims are painted black and the tank paint is so good it can’t possibly be original but to me this really does define the beauty of patina on an old motorcycle. The seat cover still has the original Feridax badge on it, the Miller instruments and headlamp have survived and there is a stunning matching clockwork clock sitting to the left of the Smiths speedometer. Little used in the last couple of years but well cared for and stored with Aspen fuel so it starts easily and runs cleanly. It will be thoroughly checked over as soon as it arrives but we know the last owner and we know the bike so there is nothing to worry about on this one.

Stop Press: since these pictures were taken a new Conways centre stand has been fitted by Classic Bike Workshop which makes life easy and safe for starting and storage. The original stands are retained.
