BMW R51/3
Hard to find a UK-market BMW twin from the fifties and this lovely AFN-supplied (yes the Porsche people nowadays) R51/ 3 retains its original Middlesex registration. The bike comes from thirty years of care and light use in a specialist collection so it is an older restoration and a quality one to boot. An important model for the manufacturer, the R51/ 3 is a sporting 500cc air-cooled opposed twin with shaft drive, telescopic forks and sprung rear suspension. The model developed into a 600cc variant but it was never sweeter than this.
Freshly-serviced, the bike features a rebuilt engine of the correct type. The numbers are factory stamped and very close but not matching, pictures available on request. A foot gear change with hand neutral is standard and easy to use, a stainless fish-tail exhaust looks and sounds beautiful, a sprung seat and a side-stand compliments the easy-on centre stand. Classic Bike Workshop have checked it over, finely fettled it and fitted new tyres. The video tells all, so easy to start and idles perfectly. Goes well on the road too, such a sweet machine in so many ways. A lightweight and enjoyable 75 year-old, which is more than can be said about some of us!
