This is an early Commando, 1969 build first registered in April 1970 so it is as much Atlas as Commando compared to the later models. This early style was not popular at first but re-emerged as the “Fastback” and is now accepted as the original Commando look. Unusually for an earlier model many of the original and identifying features have survived on this one, despite an earlier restoration which was clearly to a high standard. The engine is healthy and now runs very nicely indeed after a careful recommissioning with Classic Bike Workshop after a long period of display, unused for many years. Ralph Seymour badges proudly displayed on both side panels suggests a good service history and a number of features point to a relatively recent engine rebuild, again to a high standard. We know the story of long term ownership from the son of the last owner and although not much has survived in the way of documented history the machine speaks for itself in this regard. V5C is in order and confirms matching numbers. We haven’t tidied it up, just made it work again. Condition could be lifted significantly with the minimum of work, what you see here is the result of a quick rag-over after years of storage and the more you polish the more nice things you find underneath. It’s not perfect of course; far from it; but it clearly was and could be again with some elbow grease. The mechanical grease work has been done though and it’s ready to ride again. Obvious improvements for cosmetic quick wins would be new silencers but even those are solid, just bashed about a bit. Note the kickstart does not now foul the silencer on the right side. Video taken in the workshop because we haven’t finished working on sealing the original fibreglass tank, which is off again now for more attention. Won’t be long though.
