The best of Honda’s iconic “Fours”, a UK machine recently recommissioned.

The recorded mileage of 6,968 may be accurate as the last Tax disc is dated 1984 and there is an MOT dated August 1982 showing 6,842 miles. The original Service Booklet and Guarantee is with it but only records the pre-delivery inspection by Waltham Cross Motorcycles on 24th May 1974 and there is no other service history. There are only 5 former keepers on the V5C so it’s probably done nothing for 30 years! CSB acquired the bike half stripped with bills for lots of new parts and we’ve recommissioned the bike in our workshops using a mixture of what was there and what we had in stock (Chris has had his 500/4 since 1979) plus some new parts. The result is as you see it here; starts easily and runs smoothly although the top right silencer is holed and that is audible. It was a bit smoky at first but now runs clean and a compression check confirms all is well. Lots of work has been done including a complete carburettor rebuild after some idiots had charged the last owner a fortune to “sonic clean” them. Hydraulics have been rebuilt with new seals and hoses, fresh oil and filter obviously, new battery, the usual stuff to make it work properly. Its running on points ignition, timed to perfection, carbs balanced, tank cleaned out inside ready to fill with the modern poison they call fuel. Nice original parts survive such as the air filter cover under the remarkably good original seat. Now with a new MOT, she just needs some miles and a bit more cleaning for the summer.
