BSA A65 Lightning Clubman
An interesting bike this… Frame is 30th July 1965 A65 Spitfire Hornet (USA) and Engine is 18th March 1965 A65 Lightning Clubman (UK) so it isn’t “matching numbers” but both engine and frame came out of the factory very close to each other in 1965. In different models destined for different countries. What a happy marriage then, to see the major components of two highly desirable models together in proper Lightning Clubman spec. Strictly a replica but with all those genuine Clubman parts and a genuine motor it hardly deserves that moniker. Anyway, names go with frames so that’s what it is; a Lightning Clubman replica. And a very nice one too. Lots of lovely parts, all in the right places as far as we can see, a very expensive an impressive paint job and everything works as it should. Recent mechanical work by a marque specialist and the ignition timing has just been set and the fuelling tuned to perfection by our very own Classic Bike Workshop so it starts and runs well. There is a collection of old invoices and paperwork on file including confirmation of the numbers. An old V5 complements the V5C and states first registration as 1991 so the engine and frame have been together for at least 34 years. The engine characteristics are sporty but relaxed as is the riding position with rear-sets and ace bars. Looks good, sounds good, goes good and stopping isn’t bad either. A nice thing, particularly in that lovely metallic gold and chrome.
